Let us now turn our attention to Megan Alicia as she shares her remarkable life journey with us.
I am a 2007 graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program from the University of Western Ontario. I am a dedicated and responsible professional with a passion for excellence in the clinical area and beyond.
My professional work experience has taken place in a variety of critical care, medical, and surgical clinical areas, including emergency and mental health; adult acute care, more specifically medical oncology and surgical oncology; post-operative nursing; labour and delivery, postpartum, long-term care/gerontology; pediatrics; and public health/community settings. I also have experience of teaching as a clinical instructor for the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Western University and Brock University. Through these many experiences, I have developed a solid nursing skill base and matured as a healthcare professional.
In addition to my professional qualifications, I have a great passion for international humanitarian work and rural nursing. I previously was a member of the Board of Directors and the volunteer officer of nursing trips for Solidarity Experiences Abroad Inc, a not-for-profit organization specializing in international social justice outreach. I worked as a trip leader with youth and adolescents in college and university for volunteer medical missions serving underprivileged populations in developing countries. We provided medical care, health promotion, and education to local communities in rural areas of Central America, South America, and Africa. These life-changing opportunities have enabled me to develop good judgment, flexibility, leadership, and the ability to work effectively within stressful environments with limited resources.
As a result of my personal and professional experiences locally and abroad, I have developed a passion for understanding the lived experience and giving voice to those experiencing mental health, especially youth and seniors. In addition to my career experience, I also live with mental illness. In living with depression and anxiety, I know firsthand the frustration and struggle that comes with trying to navigate healthcare services in times of need. Through my own personal lived experience, I have an understanding of the impact of mental illness, treatment, and recovery. I desire a position in the community where I can use my knowledge and skills to assist those in their mental wellness journey and be an advocate for their needs.
My ability to learn quickly, follow directions, and think critically, all ignited by my enthusiasm, will enable me to make a significant contribution to your multidisciplinary team. I am committed to providing holistic and compassionate care.
